Former US national security advisor John Bolton confessed on television Tuesday that he had assisted in the planning of coups in other nations, but said that the January 6, 2021 riot in Washington fell short of such attempts.
According to Bolton, the attack on the US Capitol was the consequence of then-President Donald Trump “simply fumbling about from one concept to another.”
“As someone who has assisted in the planning of coups d’etat, not here, but in other countries, it requires a lot of work,” he remarked.
Bolton, Trump’s national security advisor from 2018 to 2019, did not identify which regimes he helped to destabilize, although he advocated for US military action in Venezuela throughout his tenure.
The 6th of January was “This is not an attack on our democracy. Donald Trump is watching out for Donald Trump. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity “Bolton stated.
“He eventually did let loose the rioters at the Capitol. There is no doubt about that. But not to destroy the Constitution, buy more time, return the subject to the states, or attempt to redo the problem “He continued.
Bolton, an outspoken hawk, worked in the US Departments of Justice and State during three Republican administrations, beginning with Ronald Reagan’s in the 1980s.
He served as the United States’ ambassador to the United Nations under former President George W. Bush, and his enormous white moustache has distinguished him for decades.
Bolton unrepentantly campaigned for the US invasion of Iraq and has expressed support for striking Iran and North Korea, an interventionist foreign policy style that irritated Trump, who sacked him in 2019.
Bolton’s remarks on the January 6 riots come as a congressional committee investigates if Trump or his allies played a part in planning or promoting the violent insurgency, which killed at least five people and injured 140 police officers.
On Tuesday, senators stated that a tweet by then-President Trump promising a “wild” January 6 protest was seen as a “call to arms” by members of right-wing militia groups and other Trump supporters who went on to attack the US Capitol.
