ISLAMABAD: According to a source close to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikandar Sultan Raja has never met either PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz or Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz.
According to the source, Sikandar Sultan informed Imran Khan’s messengers that he was unable to arrange a secret meeting with the CEC during his time as prime minister.
The source claimed that he had informed Imran Khan, the prime minister at the time, that despite being the CEC, he could not meet anyone, including the prime minister, in private because his office was open to all politicians and political parties.
According to the source, the current CEC is not the type of person to give in to political pressure or become defensive in response to lies and false information that are being spread about him.
Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI and a former prime minister, has repeatedly charged the CEC with meeting Maryam Nawaz and Hamza Shehbaz in private in Lahore. Sikandar Sultan had never met Hamza or Maryam, the source insisted categorically.
Sikandar Sultan reportedly travels to Lahore on occasion, but only because his family has made their home there. The source lamented that deliberate fake news are being spread against the CEC to make him controversial and stated, “He goes to Lahore to spend time with his family.
According to the source, the opposition to the CEC After the commission reserved its decision in the PTI’s foreign funding case, Sikandar Sultan was let loose. Assuring that Sikandar Sultan was determined to fulfil his constitutional responsibility of holding free and fair elections without fear or favour, the source said, “Let me assure you that the commission would not succumb to such pressure tactics.”
The upcoming by-elections in Punjab, according to Imran Khan, are being rigged in favour of the PMLN and against the PTI. The source revealed that even though Imran Khan now accuses the CEC of meeting with the PMLN leadership in secret, Imran Khan had been attempting to meet Sikandar Sultan covertly during his time as prime minister. The source claimed that the former prime minister was attempting to convince Sikandar Sultan to meet with Imran Khan through a number of sources, not just one.
According to the source, Sikandar Sultan has met with politicians from various political parties, including the PTI, but all of these encounters took place at the Pakistani Election Commission. Even recently, the CEC’s office hosted a meeting between the PTI deputy chairman and him. He spent more than an hour there. Shibli Faraz frequently stops by the CEC’s office where he meets with various Imran Khan cabinet ministers.
The source is adamant, though, that the CEC will never meet a politician or a leader in secret. The Election Commission of Pakistan rejected last Thursday the claim made by PTI Chairman Imran Khan that CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja was acting against the party “alone,” describing this perception as “wrong and absurd.” Imran Khan, the former prime minister, lambasted the CEC in a speech at the workers’ convention in Lahore, which prompted the ECP to issue its statement.
“CEC Raja should resign because he is ineligible to hold the position. He alone makes the decisions, and every single one of them is against the PTI, he had previously stated.
In addition, Khan claimed that a plot had been hatched to fabricate evidence against the PTI in the foreign funding case. “We demand that the foreign funding cases against all the major political parties should be heard together,” Khan said.
The Election Commission is a constitutional body, and all decisions are made in accordance with the Constitution and the law, the ECP stated in response to the PTI chairman’s “unfounded” allegations. Some people purposefully convey the false and untrue notion that decisions in the ECP are made on an individual basis.
The ECP insisted that all decisions made since January 2020, whether the commission had five members or three, were made with consensus and that not a single decision had a dissenting note. “This is completely wrong and absurd,” the ECP declared.
The ECP declared that it would continue to make decisions in the interest of the nation, in accordance with the Constitution, the law, and the oath, and free from outside pressure.
