Ariana DeBose takes the prize for “West Side Storyoutstanding “‘s actress in a supporting role. And she looks stunning in what can only be described as a flawless ensemble.
Broadway veteran DeBose won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her brilliant portrayal as Anita in “West Side Story,” making her the first out LGBT woman of colour to win in her category.
“So to everybody who has ever questioned their identity, ever, ever, or if you find yourself dwelling in the gray regions, there is absolutely a place for us,” DeBose said in a short address. (That phrase also alluded to the song “Somewhere” from “West Side Story,” whose lyrics were written by In Memoriam recipient Stephen Sondheim.)
Rita Moreno won the same Oscar for playing Anita in 1961’s “West Side Story,” and DeBose referred to her as her “divine inspiration.”
